Reading:

·        We are enjoying Unit 2 in our reading book.  The topic of Unit 2 is Doing the Right Thing.  J

·        “Passage to Freedom”, “The Ch’i-lin Purse”, “Jane Goodall’s 10 Ways to Help Save Wildlife”, and “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” are some of the stories we are reading.

·        We continue to do in-depth studies of each selection by discussing the genre, the author’s point of view, and the author’s purpose.  We also practice comparing & contrasting and sequencing skills.

·        Specific daily assignments should be written in your child’s planner.

Math:

·        Our math book can be accessed online. Students can print out book assignments rather than carry math books home. To access the online textbook, go to :

·        http://www.mhln.com

·        Click on “enter a class code.”

·        Students have the class code written in their planners.

·        Click on “Macmillan, McGraw-Hill Mathematics Grade-5.”

·        Then enter the page you wish to have displayed.

·        When answering word problems, students are required to include the unit with their numerical answers.

·        When doing multiplication problems they will need to show their work.

·        Students will almost always have a little homework in math each night.

·        If your child’s homework is completed, he should be able to show you the completed homework in his binder.

·        We are working in Chapter 4 on multiplication of whole numbers and decimals.

·        Please check planners for specific daily assignments.

Language Arts:

·        We are continuing our study on VERBS.

o   Action Verbs

o   Linking Verbs

o   Helping Verbs

o   Verb Tenses

·        The children are able to find subjects, predicates, nouns, verbs, and direct objects in sentences.  J

Spelling: Unit 9 post-test Wednesday.

·        Students may keep their spelling books at home all year.

·        We will administer the pre-test every Thursday.

·        Students receiving a 100% on the pre-test will not have to do the practice ditto during the week and will only be expected to take the dictation section of the post-test the following Wednesday.

·        Students not receiving a 100% on the pre-test, will be given one ditto for practice during the week.

·        They may also use any of the book activities they choose to help themselves study for the post-test.

·         Words for the dictations will come from a ditto they have in their binders of commonly misspelled words.

Check your child’s progress.

All scores from my absence have been entered into the computer.  All late work has been graded and entered as well.  If you find any scores in error, please feel free to contact me.  You may access those scores on Skyward to check on your child’s progress.  Please contact Holly Cross if you need a password for Skyward.  425-9290.

One way I try to help students keep their grades up, is by giving them points for doing an assignment, regardless of the grade.  If that is the case, all students would receive a 100% score and you will see “pfd” in the assignment description.

Another way I try to help is by letting them correct a low scoring paper.  You may see one score for an assignment and see it replaced with a new score the second day.
